Jerwood Gallery – EH Smith

Jerwood Gallery

Hastings

EH Smith facades worked closely with Architects HAT Projects on the new Jerwood Gallery, a major new project to create a permanent home for Jerwood Foundation for its collection of Modern British Art. The design brief required EH Smith to find a cladding finish that sensitively worked in complementing the existing environment of Hastings’ old town.

After considering a number of options the Architects selected to use a Ceramic tile in a bespoke 224mm x 498mm format, these tiles were then individually hand glazed just a few miles from the site itself in a stunning gloss pewter finish, allowing the building to beautifully mirror the ever changing light and weather conditions creating a “living facade” through the four seasons.

The gallery itself opened its doors in March 2012 and won a RIBA Award and Civic Trust Award and was included in the Observer’s list of 2012 in repsect of the best building of the year.
